Properties of distance-decreasing functions on the hyperbolic plane are studied. This is a natural generalization of analytic mappings of a unit disc of the complex plane into itself. The basic idea is that the author equips each line on the hyperbolic plane with a linear coordinate system and defines a cosmic protractor for measuring angles (so called metric approach to the investigated problems). Some results connected with the following Wolff's theorem: Theorem A. If \(f\) is an analytic map of \(\mathbb{D}:=\{z\mid\) \(| z|<1\}\) into \(D\), then either \(f\) is conjugate to a rotation, or there is a point \(\beta\in\overline{\mathbb{D}}\) such that the iterates of \(f\) convergence to \(\beta\) uniformly on compact subsets of \(D\).
