Let \(\Omega\) be a domain in \(\mathbb{C}\) and let \(D(\Omega)\) denote the Dirichlet space of functions \(f\) analytic in \(\Omega\) such that \(\iint_ \Omega | f'(z)|^ 2 dA(z)<\infty\). Assume that \(\Omega\) is finitely connected and let \(K_ 1,K_ 2,\dots,K_ n\) denote the bounded components of \(\mathbb{C}\setminus\Omega\). Let \(\Omega_ 0=\Omega\cup K_ 1\cup K_ 2\cup\dots\cup K_ n\) and let \(\Omega_ k=(\mathbb{C}\cup\{\infty\})\setminus K_ n\) for \(k=1,2,\dots,n\). The authors prove the following multiplication decomposition theorem: Suppose that \(\partial\Omega_ 0,\partial\Omega_ 1,\) \(\dots,\partial\Omega_ n\) are simple closed curves, \(f\in D(\Omega)\) and \(f\neq 0\). Then there exists \(f_ k\in D(\Omega_ k)\) for \(0\leq k\leq n\) such that \(f=f_ 0 f_ 1\dots f_ n\) and \(f_ k\) has no zeros on \(\partial\Omega_ j\) for \(j\neq k\). One application of this theorem shows that if \(f\in D(\Omega)\) and \({1\over f}\in D(\Omega)\) then \(f\) is cyclic with respect to the set of multipliers of \(D(\Omega)\). This generalizes a result of \textit{L. Brown} [Can. Math. Bull. 33, 419-422 (1990; Zbl 0741.30040)] for \(D(\Delta)\) where \(\Delta\) is the open unit disk. This paper also contains results about universal interpolating sequences for \(D(\Omega)\) for domains \(\Omega\) of the type described above. In particular, it is shown that every universal interpolating sequence for \(D(\Omega)\) is a finite union of the conformal images of universal interpolating sequences for \(\Delta\).
