The extension of some known results for Fitting classes of finite soluble groups to the class of \(S_ 1\)-groups (i.e. soluble groups in which each abelian section has finite total rank) is the subject of this paper. It is shown that the coincidence of the properties ``normal'' and ``abelian normal'' does not extend to \(S_ 1\)-groups in general. A Fitting class is normal if the radical is the unique injector, and abelian normal if in addition the radical contains the derived group. However, this latter class does satisfy a wreath product property used by Blessenohl and Gaschütz, namely whenever an \(S_ 1\)-group \(G\) belongs to an abelian normal Fitting class and \(p\) is a prime, then there is a positive integer \(n = n(G,p)\) such that the wreath product of \(n\) direct copies of \(G\) and \(C_ p\) also belongs to the class. The paper concludes with analogues of some embedding theorems for finite groups using this wreath product property.
