Through an appropriate definition of quantum stochastic integrals for processes on the Fock space generated by \(L^ 2\) of an infinite- dimensional nuclear space, the relationship between quantum filtering theory and the following nondemolition principle in investigated. The quantum stochastic (QS) process \((Y(t))\) is nondemolishing w.r.t. another QS process \(X(t)\) if \(X(t)\) commutes with \(Y(s)\) for all \(t\geq s\). Under suitable assumptions such a condition is shown to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of compatible conditional expectation of \(X(t)\) w.r.t. the algebra, supposed to be Abelian, generated by the measurements \((Y(s),\;s\leq t)\), for any initial state. In the final part a quantum stochastic differential equation is derived for the evolution of such a conditional expectation, which generalizes the Fujisaki- Kallianpur-Kunita equation of classical nonlinear filtering. For open quantum systems subjected to continuous time nondemolishing measurements this plays a role analogous to the Schrödinger equation for closed quantum systems.
