For a nondiscrete noncompact amenable group \(G\) let \(M\) be the set of all left invariant means on \(UCB(G)\), the space of left and right uniformly continuous bounded functions on \(G\). It is shown that for [IN]-groups \(G\) (groups with a compact neighbourhood of \(e\) which is invariant under inner automorphisms) there is a unique extension of \(M\) to \(UCB_ l(G)\), the set of left uniformly continuous functions on \(G\). Conditions for \(G\) are given that guarantee nonuniqueness of the extension or allow the computation of the cardinality of mutually singular means on \(UCB_ l(G)\). For groups which are amenable and discrete the cardinality of extensions of \(M\) to \(CB(G)\) (bounded continuous functions) is investigated.
