Let \(M\) be a Riemannian or a Kähler manifold and \(P\) a submanifold or a holomorphic submanifold, respectively. The author first introduces the notion of a cone of \(M\) with vertex \(P\) over a real hypersurface (the basis of the cone). This notion generalizes the one where \(P\) is a point. Then he derives a series of estimates for the volume of such a cone under bounding conditions for several kinds of extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of \(P\) and \(M\). Moreover, he proves that the estimates are sharp when the basis is contained in a tubular hypersurface and when \(M\) is a real or complex space form. The method is based on the use of the volume density function in Fermi coordinates and estimates for it derived via the Jacobi and Riccati equation.
