    During the last 10-15 years implicit systems (in some context also called singular systems or generalized state space systems) became an important subject in control theory. The present book deals with implicit systems of the very general type \(F{\mathcal D}x=Ex+Gw\), where \(\mathcal D\) denotes (most of the time) differentiation or shift, \(x\) stands for the internal variable and \(w\) for the external variables. These systems are, in contrast to most treatment of singular systems, non-oriented, i.e. the external variables are not partitioned into inputs and outputs. Although the system description is given in the time domain, the treatment is made formally in the frequency domain with rational expressions for the systems equation and the involved functions; the mathematical presentation of the material has some deficiencies. Since the given system equation can be interpreted as a permuted state space system (via appropriate interpretation of the external variables), a lot of the problems in the book are attacked by application of the state space results. The first chapter of the book gives a short introduction into the study of the above system equation including (formal) realization of polynomial models and rational matrices as systems of the above type. The next chapters deal with foundations like equivalence, minimal and canonical representations. In chapter 6 some algebraic design problems like output- feedback-design, observer design, and model-following control are discussed. Chapter 7 deals with optimal control and filtering for implicit systems. The ordinary Kalman filter equations for the estimation of the system parameters and internal vectors are derived in the 8th chapter. Chapter 9 is devoted to a class of large-scale systems. The book ends with a short chapter about extensions of the given results to more general system models. Every chapter closes with a sequence of exercises.
