The authors consider a class of higher order quasilinear elliptic partial differential equations of the form \[ (-1)^ m\Delta^ mu+\sigma f(| x|,u,\Delta u,\dots,\Delta^{m-1}u)=0,\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^ N, \] where \(m\geq 2\), \(N\geq 3\), \(\sigma=\pm 1\) and \(| x|\) denotes the Euclidean distance in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\). In this long paper they deal with the problem of existence of entire radial solution of the above equation having no zeros in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\). Their results generalize a series of preceding papers - in part due to the authors [e.g.: the authors and \textit{Ch. A. Swanson}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 105, 275-287 (1987; Zbl 0647.35030); Can. J. Math. 40, No. 6, 1281-1300 (1988; Zbl 0696.35049); the first author and \textit{Ch. A. Swanson}, J. Differ. Equations 83, No. 2, 379-399 (1990; Zbl 0703.35060)]. They are inspired by the theory of nonoscillatory solutions of ordinary differential equations of the form \((-1)^ my^ m+\sigma f(t,y,y',\dots,y^{m-1})=0\), \(t>0\).
