In the field of representation theory zonal polynomials play an important role as well as Schur functions, and their applications to various fields have been studied extensively. On the other hand, \textit{A. T. James} [Ann. Math. Statistics 35, 475-501 (1964; Zbl 0121.366), and ibid. 39, 1711-1718 (1968; Zbl 0177.474)] introduced an epoch-making method into multivariate analysis by using zonal polynomials. Though we need the concrete formulas of zonal polynomials expressed by certain coordinates, especially in statistics, we do not get them yet except for some special cases. Some integral formulas are known, but it is difficult to complete them actually. We give the explicit formulas of zonal polynomials in the space of \(3\times 3\) positive definite symmetric matrices \(g\) with respect to the fundamental symmetric polynomials of the eigenvalues of \(g\).
