Annular liquid jets may form enclosed volumes which can be used as chemical reactors. In order to maintain steady operating conditions, mass must be injected at a rate equal to the mass absorption rate by the liquid. If this rate is larger than the mass injection rate, the annular liquid jet will collapse. A numerical study of the collapsing procedure is presented. The study is based on the asymptotic fluid dynamics equations and uses a domain-adaptive technique which maps the unknown time-dependent geometry of the annular liquid jet into a unit square. The basic equations are solved by means of method of lines. The steady state mass absorption rate and the collapse of the jet are determined by the Froude, Péclet and Weber numbers and many other parameters. The numerical results obtained by the method of lines are in good agreement with those of a domain-adaptive finite difference method.
