\(J^*\)-triples are special types of Jordan triple systems on Banach spaces introduced by W. Kaup to describe symmetric complex Banach manifolds. In this paper we characterize the radical of \(J^*\)-triples: An element \(x\) of a \(J^*\)-triple \(U\) belongs to the Jacobson radical \(Rad(U)\) iff \(x\) is nilpotent iff \(x\) is an absolute 0-divisor. As an application we show that every element \(x\) of \(U\) admits a Jordan- Chevalley decomposition: \(x=x_ n+x_ s\) where \(x_ n\) is nilpotent, \(x_ s\) is semisimple and both components \(x_ s\), \(x_ n\) lie in the closed subtriple generated by \(x\). We also describe some consequences of these results for symmetric complex Banach manifolds.
