The phenomenon of supraconvergence, i.e. convergence of formally inconsistent finite difference schemes on nonuniform grids, was earlier investigated for both stationary and evolutionary linear problems. Now the author tries to extend this analysis to the nonlinear case. In particular, he studies the Korteweg-de Vries equation with periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the formal inconsistency due to discretization of the term \(u_{xxx}\), it is shown after stability analysis that the second-order convergence only takes place on grids with an odd number of points per period, otherwise the inconsistency leads to divergence. Some numerical experiments on randomly-generated grids by using the implicit midpoint rule confirm the results obtained.
