For every number \(\lambda\in ]0,1[\), the Nikolskii space \(N^ \lambda(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) is the space of absolutely integrable functions \(f: \mathbb{R}^ n\to\mathbb{R}\) for which the supremum of \(| h|^{-\lambda} \int_{\mathbb{R}^ n} |(f(x+h)-f(x))| dx\) over \(h\in\mathbb{R}^ n\setminus\{0\}\) is finite. Function spaces of Nikolskii type can be defined on any differentiable manifold using local coordinates. The author proves, that for functions with compact support one gets an equivalent definition with function spaces of Nikolskii type on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) by replacing the translations in the definition with all isometries on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\). This suggests the definition of similar function spaces on any Riemannian manifold that admits a transitive group of isometries. It is proved that for homogeneous spaces of compact connected Lie groups the new definition is equivalent to the classical one.
