Dual variables and their associated dual derivatives are characterized by the property that the stress power and the incremental stress power are invariant under a suitable transformation group that may be interpreted in terms of a set of intermediate configurations. These concepts are related to the formulation of incremental constitutive equations. This paper is a systematic development of these concepts and contains a precursory history of the subject, a detailed investigation of some stress and strain measures, and examples regarding rate form of the principle of virtual work, the constitutive equations in viscoelasticity, and the formulation of incremental constitutive assumptions of rate- independent plasticity.
