In this article the authors study the initial boundary value problem \[ u'(t)= A(t) u(t)+ f(t), \quad t\in [t_ 0,T], \qquad u(t_ 0)=u_ 0, \] in a Banach space \(E\). Here \(A(t): D\to E\) is a linear operator between the Banach spaces \(D\) and \(E\). The family \(A(\cdot)\) of linear operators satisfies all the requirements of Kato's semigroup approach to non-autonomous hyperbolic equations, except that it is not required that the domain \(D\) common to all the operators \(A(t)\) is dense in \(E\). Under suitable regularity assumptions for \(f\) and for the family \(A(t)\) and under compatibility conditions for \(u_ 0\) existence and uniqueness of solutions \(u\in C^ 1(t_ 0,T;E)\) and of suitably defined weak solutions in \(C(t_ 0,T;E)\) and \(L^ p(t_ 0,T;E)\) is proved. To prove this result, the Yosida approximation for the operator given by the time derivative is used. As an example, an existence and regularity result for a first order partial differential equation with discontinuous coefficients is proved.
