Let \(\pi: \overline{M}\to M\) be a smooth fibre bundle over \(M\) with fibre \(F\) and associated principal bundle \(P\) whose structural group is a compact connected Lie group \(G\). Given a Riemannian metric \(g\) on \(M\), a connection \(\varphi\) on \(P\), a \(G\)-invariant metric \(h\) on the fibre \(F\), there is a unique Riemannian metric \(\bar g\) on \(\overline{M}\) such that \(\pi: (\overline{M},\bar g)\to (M,g)\) is a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibres isometric to \((F,h)\). In this paper the problem of choosing the data \(g\), \(\varphi\), \(h\) so that \(\bar g\) is Einstein is studied. This strategy for constructing Einstein metrics is called the reverse Kaluza-Klein ansatz, since the Kaluza-Klein ansatz usually refers to the opposite procedure in which only \(\overline{M}\) is a priori given, and one seeks an Einstein metric \(\bar g\) on \(\overline{M}\) which exhibits spontaneous compactification, i.e. \((\overline{M},\bar g)\) admits a Riemannian submersion structure with compact internal space \(F\). Most constructions of Einstein metrics by the reverse Kaluza-Klein ansatz in the literature utilize bundles with abelian structural group. For a sample of such constructions, see [\textit{S. Kobayashi}, Tôhoku Math. J., II. Ser. 15, 121-139 (1963; Zbl 0114.376); \textit{D.Page}, Phys. Lett. 79 B, 235-238 (1979); \textit{L. Bérard-Bergery}, Inst. Elie Cartan, Univ. Nancy I 6, 1-60 (1983; Zbl 0544.53038); \textit{N. Koiso} and \textit{Y. Sakane}, Non-homogeneous Kähler-Einstein metrics on compact complex manifolds, Curvature and topology of Riemannian manifolds, Proc. 17th Int. Taniguchi Symp., Katata/Jap. 1985, Lect. Notes Math. 1201, 165-179 (1986; Zbl 0591.53056); \textit{D. Page} and \textit{C. Pope}, Classical Quantum Gravity 4, 213-225 (1987; Zbl 0613.53020); \textit{M. Ivang} and \textit{W. Ziller}, J. Differ. Geom. 31, No. 1, 215-248 (1990; Zbl 0691.53036)]. The Einstein manifolds constructed in [Wang and Ziller, loc. cit.] exhibit an especially wide range of properties, owing to the great freedom in choosing both the base (products of Kähler-Einstein manifolds with positive first Chern class) and fibre.
