For a negatively graded Lie algebra \(K^ -=\oplus_{i<0} K_ i\) it is shown that there exists a ``universal graded Lie algebra'' \(U\), unique up to isomorphism, such that for every graded Lie algebra \(L\) with negative part \(L^ -\) isomorphic to \(K^ -\) and for \(\psi\) an isomorphism of \(L^ -\) onto \(U^ -\) there exists a unique homomorphism \(\varphi\) of \(L\) into \(U\) satisfying \(\varphi\iota_ L=\iota_ U\psi\). \(U\) can be identified with a subalgebra of an appropriately graded general Cartan type algebra \(W(n)\). By imposing additional conditions on \(K^ -\) other types of universal graded Lie algebras are defined, and then all graded Cartan type Lie algebras are characterized as types of universal graded Lie algebras.
