Starting with the analysis of bifurcation phenomena in the presence of symmetries, the author introduces and studies general properties of ``intrinsic isotropy subgroups'' of finite groups (for general compact Lie groups, see the author [Diff. Integral Equat. 3, 1015-1034 (1990; Zbl 0715.58007)]). The main results of the paper are that (1) groups are or are not intrinsic isotropy subgroups of themselves depending only upon their order being odd or even and (2) the characterization of 2-nilpotent subgroups as an optimal class of groups with a unique maximal intrinsic isotropy subgroup. The author also shows that real representations of groups much more than complex ones or others are relevant in bifurcation theory.
