The main result of this paper is the following: by a suitable choice of transversals, the principal term of the monodromy transformation of a monodromy singular point is linear. This theorem appears as an assertion in \textit{I. V. Arnol'd} and \textit{S. Yu. Il'yashenko} [Ordinary differential equations. VINITI, T. 1, 7-149 (1986)]. The proof is based on the method of sigma-manifolds, i.e. a manifold obtained by sigma- processes which are applied to the singular points of a plane analytic vector field. This idea is due to Yu. S. Il'yashenko but the concept of a ``tree of a sigma-manifold'', also used in the proof, is introduced by the author. As a consequence the focus-center difference question is solved [see \textit{Yu. S. Il'yashenko}, Funct. Anal. Appl. 6(1972), 197-202 (1973); translation from Funkt. Anal. Prilozh. 6, No. 3, 30-37 (1972; Zbl 0267.34025)].
