The paper deals with a multi-component system with time-dependent characteristics. It introduces a measure for the rate of generation of information about the failure time of the system applying the mutual information of different components. Mutual information is a well-known measure of information and has many useful properties. In this paper traditional measures are slightly modified to get a better usefulness in the area of reliability. Several properties of the measure are derived and sample calculations for several hypothetical systems are presented.
