The mathematical treatment of the weak and strong interactions are still challenging problems. Very soon there have been developed the analytic \(S\)-matrix theory (SMT) and the quantum field theory (QFT). Both didn't solve the problems, but have influenced all of the following scientific discussions in high energy physics. It seems to be adequate to write the history of this area with the model of competitive research programs, especially when the conceptual interplay between competitive programs is considered. The main purpose of this paper is not philosophical, but with a clarification of the interaction between QFT and SMT manifested in the Reggeization program. The study presented here is intended to provide a reliable historiographical basis for further philosophical considerations. The study is an `internal' one and deals primarily with the theoretical concepts of the physics involved. No attempt has been made to explore fully the intricacies of the ontological and epistemological commitments of QFT and SMT.
