    Let \(H\) be a complex Hilbert space, \(D\) a closed subspace of \(H\) and \(B(D,H)\) the set of bounded linear operators from \(D\) to \(H\). A bounded linear operator \(A: D\to H\) is shown to be the restriction of a normal operator in \(H\) iff there exists a \(\sigma\)-additive \(B(D,H)\)-valued measure \(F\) such that \(\| F(\sigma)x\|^ 2= (F(\sigma)x,x)\), \((F(\sigma)x, F(\tau)y)=0\) for \(\sigma\cap \tau=\emptyset\) and \(Ax= \int zF(dz)x\) for \(x,y\in D\).
