A semigroup \(S\) is called local if there exists a greatest proper congruence relation on \(S\). A semigroup \(S\) is called medial if it satisfies the identity: \(x (yz)w= x(zy)w\). The following result is proved. Theorem. A semigroup \(S\) is medial and local if and only if one of the following is satisfied: (1) \(S\) is a cyclic \(p\)-group. (2) \(S\) is a rectangular band of order 2. (3) \(S\) is a non-trivial cyclic nilsemigroup. (4) \(S\) is a medial semigroup which is a semilattice of a nilsemigroup \(S_ 0\) and a rectangular abelian group \(S_ 1\) with \(S_ 0\) an ideal of \(S\) and for all \(t\in S_ 1\), \(StS=S\).
