Inertial manifolds were introduced by \textit{C. Foias}, \textit{G. R. Sell} and \textit{R. Temam} [J. Differ. Equations 73, No. 2, 309-353 (1988; Zbl 0643.58004)]. In this paper it is shown that inertial manifolds behave quite differently from stable manifolds with respect to smoothness properties. For a smaller class of nonlinear maps, similar results were obtained by \textit{F. Demengel} and \textit{J. M. Ghidaglia} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 16, No. 1, 79-87 (1991; Zbl 0723.58033)].
