If \(f\) is \({\mathcal M}\)-harmonic in the unit ball \(B_ n\) of \(\mathbb{C}^ n\) [cf. the last author, ``Function theory of the unit ball of \(\mathbb{C}^ n\)'', Springer Verlag, New York - Berlin (1980; Zbl 0495.32001), p. 49] and \(f\in L^ 1(B_ n)\), then \(f\) has the volume-mean-value property, i.e. \[ \int_{B_ n}(f\circ\psi)d\nu=f[\psi(0)] \tag{1} \] for each automorphism \(\psi\in\text{Aut}(B_ n)\). The authors establish that conversely, if \(f\in L^ 1(B_ n)\), and \(f\) satisfies (1) for each \(\psi\in\text{Aut}(B_ n)\), then \(f\) is \({\mathcal M}\)-harmonic for \(n<12\), but it is not true for \(n\geq 12\).
