    The membrane oscillations in a rectangle \(\Omega= (0,a)\times (0,b)\) are considered as a control problem in the form: \(u_{tt}= \Delta u+ \sum^ N_{j=1} \delta((x,y)- P_ j)v_ j\), \((x,y)\in\Omega\), \({\partial u\over \partial\nu}\Bigl|_{\partial\Omega\times (0,T)}= \sum^ M_{j= N+1} \delta(s- S_ j)v_ j\), \(s\in\partial\Omega\), where \(u(t,x,y)\) gives the height of the point \((x,y)\in\Omega\) at a time \(t\), \(P_ 1,P_ 2,\dots,P_ N\in \Omega\), \(S_{N+1},\dots,S_ M\in \partial\Omega\); \(v_ j(t)\in L^ 2(0,T)\) \((j=1,\dots,M)\) are controls, and the initial condition is \(u(0,x,y)= u_ t(0,x,y)= 0\) on \(\Omega\). The principal results of the paper are contained in two theorems giving the conditions under which the written system is controllable, approximately controllable, and approximately noncontrollable.
