\textit{P. Dembowski} and \textit{I. G. Ostrom} [Math. Z. 103, 239-258 (1968; Zbl 0163.424)] in studying finite projective planes of order \(m\) with collineation groups of order \(m^ 2\), defined a planar function, of degree \(m\). This is a mapping from \(G\) into \(H\) (two groups of order \(m)\), which, if it exists, gives rise to an affine plane of order \(m\) having a collination group isomorphic to \(G \times H\). In the present paper, the author considers the case in which \(m=p^ n\), where \(p\) is an odd prime, \(n>1\), and \(G\) and \(H\) are Abelian. He shows that if \(H\) has a cyclic subgroup of order \(p^ e\), for \(e \geq [(n+2)/2]\), then there is no planar function from \(G\) to \(H\).
