The authors explore conditions for the construction of polynomial eigen- operators for the Hamiltonian of collective string field theories. Such eigen-operators arise for only one monomial potential \(v(\chi) = \mu\chi^ 2\) in the collective field theory. The operators form a \(w_ \infty\)-algebra isomorphic to the algebra of vertex operators in two- dimensional gravity models. The authors show that potentials containing only monomials of orders larger than three, or smaller than one, have no non-zero-energy polynomial eigen-operators. Their analysis leads them to consider a particular potential \(v(\chi) = \mu\chi^ 2 + g/\chi^ 2\); they construct a Lie algebra of polynomial eigen-operators for this potential. This algebra is a symmetric 2-index Lie algebra which can be represented as a subalgebra of \(U(sl(2))\). The authors' general goal in this work is to address the algebraic aspects of the collective field theory. These algebraic issues are directly related to the question of complete integrability, which for the authors means the existence of an infinite algebra of eigen-operators for the original Hamiltonian.
