The authors develop existence and convergence theory for two types of preconditioners for \(H\)-matrices by proving similar results for related \(M\)-matrices. It is an improvement of some known results for \(M\)-matrices. The theory is based on certain assumptions which have to be satisfied by the sparse approximation rules used in the factorizations. Altough the assumptions necessary for the \(H\)-matrix case are stronger than for the \(M\)-matrix case, the obtained results for the \(H\)-matrices are at least as good as for the corresponding \(M\)-matrix. The proofs are done by straightforward calculations.
