The multigroup neutron diffusion equations for a subcritical reactor are discretized on a two-dimensional rectangular grid with a large mesh size. In this case the terms related to cross-sections dominate over terms connected to spatial diffusion and consequently an inversion of matrix describing local intergroup interaction is efficient. The algebraic multigrid method is improved involving adaptive procedure by means of eigenfunction approximation in the case of weak connections. The calculation of the coarse grid and of the prolongation operator follows Ruge's algorithm used for problems of elasticity. The algorithm is tested numerically on a two-dimensional model of a pressed water reactor.
