Materials with elastic range and plastic change of volume (Q1208996)

The authors present a theory of materials with elastic range that places no restrictions on plastic changes of volume or on related quantities. Two classes of such materials are described in detail: von Mises materials and ideally plastic materials. For the first one, it is shown that when the plastic change of the volume is allowed, the total volume cannot change in simple shear, any plastic change of volume must be compensated by an elastic one; also shear stress maintaining the flow need not be constant.
