This paper is concerned with some global and asymptotic results on the equation \(u''+Lu+\| u \|^ 2_ Hu=0\) for \(L\) a self-adjoint, positive operator on a separable Hilbert space. It may be considered an approximation of the more difficult cubic abstract wave equation. The equation is isometrically mapped to an infinite set of ordinary differential equations on a Hilbert space, \({\mathfrak X}\), of sequences. Conservation laws are found giving existence of global, bounded solutions in a family of Sobolev spaces. These are mild solutions (as in semilinear evolution equation theory). Solutions tending weakly to zero in \({\mathfrak X}\) are identically zero. Further, under a separation assumption on the eigenvalues of \(L\), trajectories are relatively compact. Finally, the authors discuss quasiperiodicity (cf. complete integrability in finite dimensional Hamiltonian theory) giving sufficient conditions on the initial values.
