This is an improvement of a result of \textit{W. Ma} and \textit{M. Racine} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 320, 171-192 (1990; Zbl 0701.16025)]. Consider the polynomial \(T_{2n}(x_ 1,\dots,x_{2n-1};x_{2n})\) obtained from the standard polynomial \(S_{2n}\) by omitting the summands such that \(x_{2n}\) is in positions \(\equiv 0\), \(3\text{ mod }4\). In that paper the authors have proved that \(T_{2n}\) vanishes on the space \(H_ n\) of all symmetric \(n\times n\) matrices (over an arbitrary field). It is established now that this assertion holds for \(x_{2n}\) replaced by any (not necessarily symmetric) \(n\times n\) matrix.
