The problem discussed here is a special case of the question whether a local noetherian ring \(R\) that admits a nonzero module \(M\) of finite length and finite projective dimension is necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. This is intimately related to the so-called Bass' conjecture, solved for the equicharacteristic case by Peskine-Szpiro and Hochster. The author here shows the answer to be affirmative for rings of type 1. This result is also contained in an early paper of \textit{C. Peskine} and \textit{L. Szpiro} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A, 1117--1120 (1968; Zbl 0162.34001)]. This note shows that the hypothesis on the type of \(R\) holds if \(M\) has a simple core.
