The book is one of the best text books ever have been written in the field of data communications and computer networks. It has been designed and written for students studying the subjects of data communications and computer networks and it is also suitable for practicing computer professionals and engineers. The organization of the book closely follows the OSI reference model. The first part (data communications) concentrates to the fundamental issues that need to be addressed to achieve reliable transfer of data across a serial data link. Consequently, that part comprises basic concepts of electrical interfaces, data transmission principles and data link protocols. Part Two (computer networks) comprises local area networks (LAN), high- speed LANs, metropolitan area networks and interconnection of LANs, i.e. bridges. Moreover Part Two is dedicated to wide area networks up to the OSI-layer 3. Finally, the second part of the book contains internetworking issues. Part Three (open systems) comprises transport protocols, application support protocols, application-specific protocols (FTAM, MHS, VT, DTP, network management etc.) and system aspects (e.g. layer interactions, interlayer communications, implementation aspects). The book is suitable for self study, too. Examples are included in most chapters and a large number of figures will help considerably to explain many of the topics. Also, a list of exercises is included at the end of each chapter. A very useful glossary and a bibliography are parts of the appendices of the excellent book.
