The paper deals with an inverse problem relative to the equation (with memory) \[ (1) \quad u'(t) - Au(t) - \int^ t_ 0 B(t - s)u(s)ds = E(t)z + f(t),\;0 \leq t \leq T, \qquad (2) \quad u(0) = u_ 0, \] and the additional information (3) \(\Phi (u) = g\). Here \(A,B,E\) and \(\Phi\) are given linear operators on Banach spaces. In the concrete case \(A\) is a linear elliptic differential operator. By the equations (1)--(3) the pair \((u,z)\) is to be determined. In the nonlinear case (1) is replaced by \[ u'(t) - Au(t) - \int^ t_ 0 B_ 0(t - s) u(s)ds - \int^ t_ 0 B_ 1 [t - s,u(s),z] ds = f(t),\;0 \leq t \leq T. \] In the linear case the authors prove existence and stability, in the nonlinear case stability.
