Considered is the differential equation \(-(py')' = \lambda py\) for \(0 < x < 1\) together with boundary conditions \(y'(0) - hy(0) = 0\) and \(y'(1) + Hy(1) = 0\). \(h\) and \(H\) are given constants and \(p\) satisfies \(p(x) \geq p_ 0 > 0\). The ``impedance'' \(p\) represents the cross sectional area of a duct. It is supposed that \(p\) belongs to \(L^ \infty(0,1)\) but not to \(H^ 2(0,1)\). Otherwise the problem could be reduced to the equation \(- u''+qu = \lambda u\) with potential \(q\). The inverse problem is to determine \(p\) from spectral data. Here, a numerical method is established which yields an impedance \(p\) from finitely many pieces of eigenvalue data. The method consists of finding a zero of a finite dimensional nonlinear map applying Newton's method. Numerical examples are given.
