The author studies the simplest case of a Donaldson invariant of a smooth 4-manifold. Namely, when the moduli space of anti-self dual connections is 0-dimensional and thus the invariants just counts the (signed) number of points. He calls these ``simple'' invariants. He proves that under certain assumptions this simple invariant behaves multiplicatively under a ``connected sum along a 2-torus. For example, the K3 surface is obtained by gluing two rational elliptic surfaces along the torus fibre and gluing more rational elliptic surfaces yields all the other regular elliptic surfaces without multiple fibres. Since the value of the simple invariant for K3 was known to be 1 it follows that all these surfaces have simple invariant 1 (if the second Stiefel-Whitney class restricts nontrivially to the fibre, an assumption which comes from the assumptions in the product formula)''.
