The authors, motivated by the physics literature, consider the basic ring-theoretic properties of two `\(q\)-analogues' \(H_ q\) and \(H_ q'\) of the enveloping algebra of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra. Both of these algebras are iterated skew polynomial rings and so are quite amenable to study. For example, they are Artin-Schelter regular of dimension three. The authors also compute the prime ideals of \(H_ q\) and note that it has a \(q\)-analogue of the Weyl algebra as a factor. The properties of \(H_ q'\) resemble the classical case less closely than those of \(H_ q\). Indeed, \(H_ q'\) is primitive.
