Let R be a ring with 1 and let \(GL_ n(R)\) be the general linear group of degree n over R. Suppose \(M_ n\) is a \(GL_ n(R)\)-module for every \(n>1\) with a \(GL_ n(R)\)-homomorphism from \(M_ n\) into \(M_{n+1}\). (Here \(GL_ n(R)\) is a subgroup of \(GL_{n+1}(R)\) via the usual upper inclusion of \(GL_ n(R)\) into \(GL_{n+1}(R).)\) Then \(M_ n\) is said to be a system of coefficients for \(GL_ n(R)\). This paper studies the homology groups of lim \(GL_ n(R)\) with coefficients in lim \(M_ n\). Some sufficient conditions on \(M_ n\) are given to ensure that these homology groups vanish. For a stable system (in the sense of Dwyer or van der Kallen), this implies that \(H_ i(GL_ n(R),M_ n)=0\) for \(n\gg i\). The case where \(R=Z\) and the system \(M_ n\) is stable is considered with some detail and constitutes an important tool of the paper.
