Suppose \(\Gamma\) is a Fuchsian group leaving \(\Delta^*\), the exterior of the unit disk, invariant and T(\(\Gamma)\) is the Bers model of the Teichmüller space in the space \(B(\Delta^*,\Gamma)\). The outradius of T(\(\Gamma)\) is the infimum of the radii of the balls about 0 in \(B(\Delta^*,\Gamma)\) which contain T(\(\Gamma)\). It is known that the outradius cannot exceed 6. Here precise conditions are given for equality. Specifically, the following theorem is proved. The outradius of T(\(\Gamma)\) is 6 if and only if one of the following conditions is valid: 1. For any positive d, there exists a hyperbolic disk D of radius d so that \(\gamma\) (D)\(\cap D\neq \emptyset\) has only the solution \(\gamma =id\) in \(\Gamma\). 2. For any positive d, there exists a collar of width d about the axis of a hyperbolic element of \(\Gamma\).
