It is proved that if a Banach space X fails RNP, then for every positive \(\epsilon\) there exists a separable closed convex subset C of X such that diam C\(=1\) and each slice of C has the diameter greater than 1- \(\epsilon\). If moreover X is separable then for each positive \(\epsilon\) there exists a closed convex, circled subset of the unit ball of X such that the distance between X and the set of extreme points of weak* closure of X in \(X^{**}\) is greater than \(1-\epsilon\) too. It is also shown that for some equivalent norm on X the set C satisfying the above mentioned properties (with the exception of the separability) can be chosen to be the unit ball taken with respect to the new norm. Similar results for weak*-compact subsets of dual Banach spaces without RNP are also discussed and a few counterexamples are presented. One of them answers in the negative the following question of the reviewer: Assume that \((S,{\mathcal A},\mu)\) and (T,\({\mathcal B},\nu)\) are finite measure spaces such that \(S\subset T\), \({\mathcal A}=S\cap {\mathcal B}\), \(\nu^*(S)=\mu (S)\) and \(\mu\) is the restriction of \(\nu\) to S. Suppose \(f: S\to X\) is a \(\mu\)-Pettis integrable function with the norm relatively compact range of its integral. Does there exist a \(\nu\)-Pettis integrable g: \(T\to X\) such that g restricted to S is weakly equivalent to f?
