The authors consider a first order partial differential equation which describes the evolution in time of a population where individuals can be distinguished by some significant property, as, for example, size. Obtaining by the classical method of characteristics the integral representation of a differentiable solution to the considered problem, the authors define a generalized solution via the same formulae even if this generalized solution is integrable only. In the next consideration the authors reformulate the problem as an abstract first oder evolution equation with the operator A which is shown to be a generator of a \(C_ 0\) semigroup, and then they show that this semigroup gives a solution which coincides with the generalized solution mentioned above. In the last part, the two finite-dimensional approximation schemes are constructed, and the convergence of these schemes is proved.
