For a complete Riemannian 2-manifold \(M\) let \(\Omega_ r\) denote the geodesic disc of radius \(r\). In the author's paper [ibid. 26, 315-326 (1987; Zbl 0631.53007)] a formula for \((d/dr)L(\partial \Omega_ r)\) is given in terms of the Euler characteristic \(\chi\) and the total curvature. The correct formula is the following: \[ L'(\partial \Omega_ r)=2\pi \chi (\Omega_ r)-\int_{\Omega_ r}K + \sum (2 \tan (\theta_ i/2)-\theta_ i) \] where the sum ranges over the negative exterior angles of \(\partial \Omega_ r\). This formula can also be found in \textit{K. Shiohama} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 94, 310--316 (1985; Zbl 0582.53036),p. 313]. In any case the angle term is nonpositive and leads to an inequality for \(L'(\partial \Omega_ r)\) which is sufficient for the rest of the author'sd paper. In Shiohama's paper it is shown that the angle term is small for sufficiently large \(r\). Thus in the limit \(r\to \infty\) one gets \(\lim (1/r)L(\partial \Omega_ r)=2\pi \chi -\int K\).
