\textit{S. Mardešić} [Pac. J. Math. 23, 557-568 (1967; Zbl 0161.199)] proved that continuous (Hausdorff) images of ordered compacta are rim- metrizable. The first named author (1988) showed that every hereditarily locally connected continuum is a continuous image of an ordered continuum and is rim-countable. The authors use T-set approximations of images of ordered continua to prove the following facts: (1) If a (Hausdorff) space X is a continuous image of an ordered compactum, then \(\dim X=ind\;X=Ind\;X\), and X admits a basis B such that for every \(U\in B\), \(Bd(U)\) is metrizable and \(\dim(Bd(U))\leq \dim X-1\). Moreover, if \(\dim X>0\), then \(\dim X=\max \{1, \sup\{\dim Y:\) \(Y\subset X\) is closed and metrizable\}\}, and if each closed metrizable subset of X is zero-dimensional, then X is rim- finite. (2) If a rim-scattered space X is a continuous image of an ordered compactum, then it is rim-countable. These results improve some theorems of \textit{S. Mardešić} [loc. cit. and Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 121, 424-433 (1966; Zbl 0151.303) and \textit{J. N. Simone} [Pac. J. Math. 69, 269-274 (1976; Zbl 0332.54026)] and solve a problem posed by S. Mardešić and P. Papić in 1963. The paper ends with three questions. The authors have recently answered the first two of these three questions in the negative by constructing a rim-countable locally connected continuum which is the continuous image of no ordered continuum. The third question remains open and asks whether a rim-scattered and locally connected continuum is rim-countable.
