Let \(S_ n\) be a ball in Euclidean n-space of diameter a whose center is chosen at random and let V signify the (n-1)-dimensional volume of the intersection of \(S_ n\) with a set of parallel hyperplanes whose distance between adjacent pairs is a. The author determines the density, expected value and variance of the random variable V and, from a known independence result, extends her results to the (n-1)-dimensional volumes cut off from \(S_ n\) by the hyperplanes which form a cubic lattice of edge length a.
