This note solves the one-dimensional Schrödinger problem of the scattering of plane waves by a localized potential. The finite element method is shown to be instrumental in obtaining scattering and tunneling solutions of this problem. Computation of the wavefunction leads to solving two linear banded systems. This method is found more efficient in treatment of tunneling problems than earlier finite difference schemes.
