In the paper of the second author and \textit{J. Szép} [Lect. Notes Math. 998, 385-403 (1983; Zbl 0516.20041)] the concept of \(\Gamma\)- decomposition of a semigroup S was introduced under the basis of Szép's left and right decompositions \(D_ L(S)=\{S_ i\}\) and \(D_ R(S)=\{D_ j\}\). That is, \(\Gamma =\{C_{ij}\}\), where \(C_{ij}=S_ i\cap D_ j\). In the first part of this paper, a detailed description of the \(\Gamma\)-decomposition of a regular semigroup S is given for each of 7 possible different cases of S. This completes the original study of the second author and \textit{J. Szép} [Acta Sci. Math. 40, 121-128 (1978; Zbl 0394.20047)] in which the work on the decompositions \(D_ L(S)\) and \(D_ R(S)\) of a regular semigroup began. Further, the increasing elements of a regular semigroup are investigated. Secondly, a classification of all bands is obtained by means of \(D_ L(S)\) and \(D_ R(S)\), and finally the authors describe sufficient conditions on the components of \(D_ L(S)\) and \(D_ R(S)\) so that a band S is one of the types classified by means of identities of three variables.
