The author studies linearly ordered semigroups containing a maximal element; especially he derives various properties of the \({\mathcal R}\)- or \({\mathcal L}\)- or \({\mathcal D}\)-class containing the maximal element and finds conditions under which the maximal element is zero. A typical result (Proposition 5): Let a linearly ordered semigroup S with a maximal element u contain no completely prime convex ideals. Then it holds: (1) if \(u=u^ 2\) and the \({\mathcal D}\)-class containing u is one-element, then u is a zero, (2) if \(u=u^ 2\) and S is commutative then u is a zero, (3) if S is commutative then u is a zero or \(u^ 2x<u\) for every \(x\in S\).
