One says that a residually finite (resp. profinite) group \(G\) satisfies the linear core condition with constant \(c\) if all finite index (resp. open) subgroups of \(G\) have the core of index at most \(c\). It is proved that all such groups are Abelian-by-finite. The author proves that if the group \(G\) is finitely generated, then \(G\) has an Abelian Dedekind subgroup of finite index (resp. open Abelian topological Dedekind subgroup). If \(G\) is finitely generated pro-\(p\), then the center of \(G\) is open.
